Patient Prep: Things to know before your appointment

Please arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled appointment time and bring a picture ID, all insurance cards and pertinent information.

Please let us know when scheduling your appointment if you have any of the following:

  • Allergy to iodine
  • Kidney problems
  • Diabetes
  • Pacemaker
  • Any artificial or metal implants
  • Asthma
  • Current pregnancy
  • Claustrophobia

Each type of exam requires its own specific preparation. The following is a list of the most common preps. Please be aware that your exam may have a different preparation than what is listed. If you have any questions please give us a call at 303.433.9729 to discuss prior to your scheduled appointment.

Appointment Type

Bone Density / DXA:

Do not take calcium in pill form 24 hours prior to your appointment. There are no food or drink restrictions prior to your appointment.

CAT Scan (CT):

Our routine prep is to not give oral contrast; patient should have clear liquids 2-4 hours prior.

Abdomen:
Clear liquids only for 2-4 hours prior to your exam.

Abdomen / Pelvis:

Clear liquids only for 2-4 hours prior to your exam.

Brain:

Most brain / head CT's require no preparation.

Exceptions: Scans for tumors require you to consume clear liquids only for 4 hours prior to your exam.

Cardiac Scoring:

No exercise or caffeine on the day of your exam.

Chest:

Clear liquids only for 4 hours prior to your exam.

Exceptions: Scans for nodules do not require preparation.

Liver:

Clear liquids only for 2-4 hours prior to your exam.

Neck:

Clear liquids only for 4 hours prior to your exam.

Urogram:

Clear liquids only for 4 hours prior to your exam.

 

The following CT's do not require preparation:

  • Extremities
  • Facial Bone
  • Spines

CTA:

Clear liquids only for 4 hours prior to your exam.

* IV contrast patients: a 12 hour allergy prep is required if you are allergic to iodine. Please be sure to tell us at the time of scheduling your appointment.

Mammogram:

No prior preparation is needed.

Breast Biopsy / Cyst Aspiration:

Please follow the instructions that were given at the time of scheduling.

MRI:

There are no food or drink restrictions prior to your appointment. If receiving contrast, you should be well hydrated.

MRI   Arthrogram:

Please follow the instructions that were given at the time of scheduling.

Ultra Sound / US:

Abdomen:

Nothing to eat or drink after midnight prior to your scheduled appointment.

Abdomen / Pelvis:

Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. Please drink 40 oz of water 1 hour prior to your scheduled appointment. Do not use the restroom; your bladder must be full.

Kidney:

Nothing to eat or drink after midnight prior to your scheduled appointment.

Pelvis:

Please drink 40 oz of water, (5 or 6 glasses) 1 hour prior to your scheduled appointment. Do not use the restroom; your bladder must be full.

OB (Pregnancy):

Please drink 40 oz of water, (5 or 6 glasses) 1 hour prior to your scheduled appointment. Do not use the restroom; your bladder must be full.

Veins:

Please follow the instructions that you were given at the time of scheduling for vein therapy.

Veins – for DVT (blood clot):

No prior preparation is needed.

The following Ultrasounds do not require preparation:

  • Breast
  • Carotid
  • Extremity
  • Neck / Head
  • Scrotum
  • Thyroid
